Poland –> Berlin

Finally after sitting at port for 2 days in Poland we were allowed to get off! Friday morning a few friends and I woke up early to get off the ship and to find a cafe to book a ticket to Berlin and a hostel. A shuttle picked us up and dropped us off near the old town which is beautiful! It was like a fairytale after finding wifi and booking a hostel we had to find the train station and book our train soon to find out the next morning and afternoon was sold out the only open spots was the over night train which leaves at midnight (aka the train from hell). After figuring our overnight travel plans out we all went back into old town to walk around more do sightseeing and eat. It was a perfect sunny day all the polish people were nice and friendly. After a long day walking around we went back to pack and get ready and later that night got to the station by 11. A bunch of SAS people were on the same trip half going to Berlin the other half going down to Krakow to auchwitz…
Don’t recommend taking this over night train..first no one of us know which “wagon” to go on.. And of course I had a different wagon then the group I booked it with. After about a half hour of searing for a seat in a box sized room squished with 8 people I finally got my correct seat and had to sit with a few old people and I think we had a ‘body guard’ outside our room anyways sleeping was impossible with the moving and trying to find a comfy spot finally after 5 hours on the train we arrived in the middle of know where Poland and half of us got off to switch to another train for Berlin at 430am we we’re all so excited to get off that train, which a lot of sketchy things happened around the train no one was happy with that ride.. Anyways after a 3 hr layover in who knows where Poland and all sleeping on the train station floor our next train finally arrived this train was a lot nicer and we all sat near each other it was a beautiful view through the country side of Poland and Germany. After about another 5 hours we finally arrived in Berlin by 1130 and had to figure out how to get to our hostel which was pretty easy by the subway. Our hostel is pretty nice it looks like an ikea. We all then went sight seeing and saw the market, churches, the wall and more. Had a late lunch/ dinner I had schnitzel which was as big as my plate .. Of course I finished the whole thing, we did some souvenir shopping and went to part of the Berlin Wall which was a very hippy artsy area. Later we meet some Australians and ended up going a club which was really fun and had the craziest little old German cab. Overall it was a fun night.
The next morning we slept In a little and had lunch and walked around more and by 4 we to the Berlin festival which was really cool to see it’s very different from American festivals people actually hold themselves together here we stayed till midnight and saw a bunch of djs and ate some falafel which was delicious. My overall experience in Berlin was great it’s defiantly a place worth seeing and coming back to. Monday morning we have to take a noon train to Rostock to go back to the ship and check out Rostock.

Warenemunde, Germany

After Berlin we took a train towards Rostock and had to take another local to train to near the ship in a small beach town called Warenemunde about 30 SAS students did not know about this so I had to let them know and lead them to there next train. Finally after 3 1/2 hours of traveling we make it to the really cute cozy town we all walk fast towards the ship all we wanted to do was shower after our weekend in Berlin.
After finally being able to take a nice long shower and dinner a few of headed out to check out the town it was a Sunday evening so it was really empty and quiet the stores were closed and most restaurants expect for the ones along the water we headed down to the beach to take some pictures and see the light house. Next we searched for a place to go out with a another group of SAS people we were all being stared at while at the bar due to how loud everyone got we did some local bar hopping the rest of the night.
The following day I finally was able to sleeping in until lunch time and headed back out to walk around town this day everything was open lots of tourists walking around for lunch I ate at fried seafood restaurant a tried there ‘ fish and chips’ which were 10x better then London. The rest of the day we spent checking out the shops and purchasing some postcards etc.

Finally after 6 days at sea we’ve reached land Saturday consisted of waking up early for a field program to see some monuments after we walked around and saw some more sites. That night I went to the Russian ballet which was beautiful it was the black sawn.
The next day tried to sleep in a little but of course they did a crew drill at 9am. Started our day waking around to go site seeing we went to the hermitage museum which was beautiful we also visited the church of the spilled blood which was absolutely beautiful. We had lunch a such a cute restaurant it felt very homey and grandmas house like I had delicious Russian chicken ravioli.
Later that night we went out to some bars and had to be back across the bridge before 130 because it opens for boats to pass though we made it to the bridge at 125 and had to sprint across while on the middle some guy asked to take a selfie with us and we all had to run to the end. We ended up going to another bar with the group of SAS people.
The last day we spent the day walking around and had lunch at another cute decorated restaurant we thought we ordered chicken with sauce and vegetables but it was chicken soup it was delicious anyways.

Russia is very cold even in August next stop is Poland!

First week at sea

Woke up at 7am to make it to breakfast then wait in line at the campus store to get my SAS gear might of bought a little too much oops..My first class stared at 9:25 am which was intro Anthropology our professor is from jersey she’s defiantly a typical jersey old lady. Seems like we have lots of homework and reading for the class but overall It seems really interesting. My second class of the day was cross cultural psychology which was also very interesting I’m excited to learn more about it. My final class of the day was History of the Atlantic which I almost feel asleep in because we have couches and ship was swaying but this class also seems interesting at a lot to learn.

Finally after 3 classes I meeting more people we had dinner more pasta and potatoes! Yum….later that night

My second day of classes started at 925 woke up early again to make it to breakfast. First class was nutrition around the world my professor is really nice southern lady I think this is a good class to take to learn more about nutrition and staying healthy especially while on this trip. I had a big gap in between my classes so I sat up on the 7th deck to sit in the warm sun and start reading. Next class was sociology of childhood this class also seems very interesting I like all my classes so far and the professors.

The rest of the week consisted of going to class and hanging out on the top in the beautiful weather, meeting new people, and eating pasta and potatoes everyday. We also went through the Kinel cannel which is in Germany which was cool to experience going through a cannel and seeing the country side of Germany.

Friday night Which was the night before Russia we found out we will no longer be visiting Senegal, and Ghana due to the Ebola outbreak so we find out our two new ports on Monday which will be somewhere in Europe I heard (Italy, Greece, or turkey) which is all amazing places. we had to listen to a pre port lecture about Russia the do’s and don’ts etc.

First weekend on ship!

Finally found wifi!

Finally was able to bored last Saturday the ship after checking out of the hostel at 5am and taking that train again to the airport to meet at a hotel where we take the shuttle bus. A quick drive down to south Hampton and we finally arrive go through the check in process and finally arrive at my room I was the first one there. My room is a good size with a window! Went out to explore and meet up with a few people too all walk around the ship is pretty big! After a few hours of exploring and meeting new people I meet my roommate she’s from Las Vegas she’s really nice it’s nice.
Next started orientation such as safety drills, the dean speaking, and more. Everyone was so tired we all went to sleep by 12.
The next morning consisted of more orientation, meeting new people, and meeting my professors. My professors were all very nice.
At 5pm we finally left port! Which was so exciting! Next was dinner the food isn’t too bad have to get use to pasta and potatoes everyday.

London Day 3

Yet another day of exploring the city for hours I can’t feel my feet anymore! Today we went back down Oxford street, and had lunch at Prett which was pretty good. We then walked down Regents street again and some cute side streets with all high end stores after a very long walk we finally arrived at St. Pauls Cathedral which was beautiful! Probably one of the nicest buildings I have ever seen. Very important services are held here such as The wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer the launch of the Festival of Britain. St Paul’s Cathedral is a busy working church, with hourly prayer and daily services. Glad I was able to see it. Next we took a long walk over the Millennium bridge and saw the London Tower Bridge from a distance, walked along the river where a bunch of street performers were performing and finally ended up at the London eye, going for a ride would of be cool to experience but the line was so long and its $45 to go on for 20 minutes, no thanks. So we went to dinner instead at Wagamama, finally some good food. After talking about SAS for a few minutes a girl next to us at the same table ended up also being a student, small world! We talked with her about the trip, and where were from etc. After dinner we decided to talk the train back because I was not going to make it walking back for over an hour. Get on the train and go to switch lines at the next station and of course the train going in the direction we needed to go was closed for the day, back to walking it was down Oxford street, it was crazy packed with people from all over the world finally after 45 minutes we made it back. Tomorrow we finally board the MV explorer I’m way to excited! We have to get up at 530am and take the train unfortunately. The discounted shuttle bus to the airport was all booked for saturday morning of course, just my luck so now we have to schlep our 50lb and 30lb luggages through the subway again. Wish me luck!
